San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is a small community of approximately 10,000 residents that maintains its natural culture, charm and beauty while increasingly assuming the comforts of an international resort. Located approximately 20 miles north of the Costa Rican border, on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur is couched on a narrow (10 mile wide) isthmus that separates the Pacific Ocean from Lago (lake) Nicaragua. This unique geographical setting creates its own weather pattern that assures a consistent offshore breeze, large surf and less rain during the rainy season (June through November). In addition, these offshore breezes dramatically reduce humidity and provide the region with average temperatures 7 degrees cooler than the Guanacaste region of C.R, its direct neighbor to the south. (This is not 7 degrees you'll ever miss!!)

Lago Nicaragua, lying ten miles to the east, is approximately a third of the size of Lake Michigan and is unique in many ways, the least of which being the fact that it is home to the world's only fresh water sharks and the island (Ometepe) made up by two mile high (almost) volcanoes, one of which remains active.
